The words 'A', 'An' and 'The' are called articles. The articles
are used before nouns. 'A' and 'An' are indefinite articles. 'The' is a
definite article.
'A' is used before the nouns that begin with a consonant or consonant sound.

- A bridge
- A car
- A rocket
- A University
'An' is used before the nouns that begin with a vowel or vowel sound.
- An apple
- An instrument
- An idea
- An orange
- An Umbrella
You use 'the' before a noun when you know that the listener
knows or can work out what particular person/thing you are talking
about.
- The apple you ate was rotten.
- What are your plans for the future?
- The North Pole
- Did you lock the car?
